The scientific literature on gut microbiota, nutrition, and health has grown exponentially over the past few years. As a result, keeping up with this fast-moving field is increasingly challenging for busy clinicians. When it comes to gut microbiota and nutrition, health professionals note a lack of evidence-based resources for informing their practice, and limited opportunities for clinic-focused professional development. Gut Microbiota for Health is stepping up to change this by increasing its involvement in key nutrition education events.

GMFH is pleased to announce that, at two important upcoming conferences, our initiative has lent its support to a series of sessions on gut microbiota and nutrition, bringing together an international lineup of experts to speak about concrete applications of the science.

Session at the 10th EFAD conference

The 10th European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians (EFAD) conference will be held in Rotterdam (the Netherlands), on September 29th and 30th, 2017. EFAD, a federation of local dietetic associations from across Europe, aims to promote the dietetic profession and support scientific and professional development for its 30+ member organizations. The 2017 conference, with its theme, “The Future is Now”, provides an opportunity for EFAD’s 35,000 member dietitians from 27 European countries to learn about the latest science relevant to their practice.

On September 30th, GMFH will bring together three esteemed speakers for a 90-minute session, Gut microbiota targets in nutrition. EFAD representative Peter Weijs of Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (the Netherlands) will chair the session with the following speakers:

  • Hervé Blottière (France)—Gut microbiota function and scientific state of the art
  • Karine Clément (France)—Current and emerging evidence that links gut microbiota and metabolic conditions: Current limitations, and role of diet among other factors influencing gut microbiota
  • Stine Störsrud (Sweden)—Specific dietary practices that dietitians and nutritionists can use with clients to nurture the gut microbiota

Session at the 21st ICN

The 21st International Congress of Nutrition (ICN), organized by the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS) with the theme “From Sciences to Nutrition Security”, is scheduled for Buenos Aires (Argentina) from October 15th to 20th, 2017.

IUNS promotes advancement in nutrition science, research, and development by encouraging cooperation at the global level; it has a “special consultative status” with organizations that include the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The goal of the 2017 IUNS conference is to address critical aspects of nutrition in a multi-cultural environment.

At the ICN, Gut Microbiota for Health is inviting speakers to give a session on Gut microbiota targets in nutrition on October 17th. The session features:

  • Joël Doré (France)—Functions and dysfunction of the Gut Microbiota
  • Paul Enck (Germany)—Dysbiosis in functional bowel disorders
  • Torben Hansen (Denmark)—The gut microbiota in obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes
  • Elena Verdú (Canada)—Therapeutic approaches to correct gut dysbiosis: Diet, probiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation
