According to many scientific studies, having a balanced gut microbiota is essential for gut health. Just like a big city, where the whole community works together to make the place work, our gut is populated by trillions of microbes that help us live a healthy life. “We have a lot of bacteria in our body and the reason they are so important is that without any of these microbes the immune system would not be developed,” explains Dr. Antonio Gasbarrini.

However, every person is different and the same can be said for the gut microbiota. “We need to move from general to personalized medicine. In the future, we will have different healthy microbiota profiles for everyone,” highlights Dr. Gasbarrini.

Antonio Gasbarrini currently works at the Universita’ Cattolica del Sacro Cuore-Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli IRCCS in Rome (Italy) as a Professor of Gastroenterology and Director of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He attended the 7th Gut Microbiota for Health World Summit in 2018.
