What would the world be like without microbes?

“In an article published in 1885 in the weekly records of the meetings of the French Academy of Sciences, Louis Pasteur wrote: ‘For years now, during our talks in the laboratory with young scholars around me, I have often said that it would be interesting to feed a young animal (take a rabbit, a guinea pig, a dog or chicken, for example) and, from birth, feed it with purely nutritional substances, defined as foodstuffs to which they would artificially and completely remove common microbes. I was unwilling to say anything; I do not deny that if I had time to carry out this study with the preconceived idea that life, in these circumstances, it would be impossible.’”[…]
