Vegetarian vs. Omnivores – An interview with Suzanne Devkota

Opting to follow a vegetarian diet is becoming a growing trend in Western countries, but is it a healthy choice as well? What impact does a plant-based diet have on the gut microbiota compared with an omnivorous one?

Suzanne Devkota, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Gastroenterology division at Cedars Sinai Medical Centre (USA), is interested about the convergence of food, health and our gut microbiota. Interviewed at the 8th Gut Microbiota for Health World Summit 2019, Prof. Devkota explains that microbiota changes not only will be observed when an individual goes from an omnivorous diet to a vegetarian one, but two people do not respond in the same way to the same diet. Multiple studies in humans reach the same conclusion: there is no a one-size-fits-all diet.
