Two enzymes from a gut bacterium could contribute to increasing the amount of blood available for transfusions

Some scientists have hypothesized that the gut microbiome might contain enzymes that metabolize the blood antigens. It seems this is the case, as two enzymes from the gut bacterium Flavonifractor plautii have been found to convert A and B type blood into universal type O donor blood.
