Postbiotics and next-generation probiotics are emerging strategies to promote health and manage disease through targeting the human microbiome in a specific way. This article updates what is known in the field and how next-generation probiotics and postbiotics might impact on clinical practice in the foreseeable future.

Scientists agree that having a gut microbiota that is in ‘good shape’ is a crucial component of individual health and well-being. Although exactly how ‘good shape’ is defined is not so clear, many experts recommend consuming more live dietary microbes through including fermented foods that retain live microbial components.

Identifying high quality probiotics available in the marketplace isn’t an easy task. A recent panel of experts suggest some recommendations to companies producing probiotics for assuring probiotics’ quality, from their manufacture to their selling.
