About Mary Ellen Sanders

Mary Ellen Sanders is a consultant in the area of probiotic microbiology, with special expertise on paths to scientific substantiation of probiotic product label claims. Dr. Sanders served as the founding president of the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics and is currently the organization’s executive science officer.

Scientists agree that having a gut microbiota that is in ‘good shape’ is a crucial component of individual health and well-being. Although exactly how ‘good shape’ is defined is not so clear, many experts recommend consuming more live dietary microbes through including fermented foods that retain live microbial components.

Identifying high quality probiotics available in the marketplace isn’t an easy task. A recent panel of experts suggest some recommendations to companies producing probiotics for assuring probiotics’ quality, from their manufacture to their selling.
